Harbour and history

In Föglö’s maritime history, Degerby grew beside an important sailing route. Customs, pilotage, trade and services for travellers were established in the village. Harbour activity and village life were therefore closely intertwined in a community shaped by movement through the archipelago.

Culture and local stories

Local history is presented in Föglö Museum, housed in a former customs warehouse built in 1826. Wooden houses and the old customs area recall the monitoring of goods and borders in these islands. This customs heritage gives a tangible human setting to the vessels passing through the area.
