Harbour and history

Förby’s harbour setting is associated with the history of limestone production in Särkisalo. Limestone had long been used in the region before the Förby quarry was established in 1881. Coastal transport connections allowed extraction to become part of a wider network serving construction and industry.

Culture and local stories

The relationship between quarries, production sites and the shoreline can still be read as industrial history. The limestone districts of the Turku archipelago form a distinct layer of its cultural heritage. Here the harbour story is particularly connected with stone, work and transport, alongside the broader maritime landscape.
