Harbour and history
Hamina’s harbour history belongs to the trade and transport networks of the Gulf of Finland. Its predecessor, Veckelax Nystad, was founded in 1653. Later port development became linked with forest-industry exports and the port organisation shared with Kotka.
Culture and local stories
Hamina’s distinctive circular street plan was created during rebuilding in the 1720s. The radial streets and fortress setting recall the town’s position as a trading place in a border region. Its historic name, Fredrikshamn, remains in use in Swedish, preserving another part of that past.
