Harbour and history
Hanko’s West Harbour and railway opened in 1873. The location was developed as Finland’s first winter port, and the town was founded the following year. Connecting the harbour with the railway helped maintain the country’s sea transport links through winter.
Culture and local stories
Military history forms another layer of the Hanko Peninsula’s landscape. Fortifications on Gustavsvärn and neighbouring islands protected the approaches and harbour. Commerce, rail transport and maritime defence can therefore be read together in the history of this port town.
