Harbour and history
Imatra’s water transport setting brings together Lake Saimaa and the Vuoksi river system. Industrial development used water both for transport and as a source of power. The harbour places belong to a town whose different districts were shaped by lakes, rivers and manufacturing.
Culture and local stories
A long tourism tradition grew around Imatrankoski, associated with the visit of Empress Catherine the Great in 1772. Admiration for the rapids developed into international tourism. In Imatra’s cultural history, the same water has supported working life and inspired visitors through its scenery.
