Harbour and history

In Joutseno, the shores of Saimaa have been linked with timber-processing transport. Honkalahti Sawmill was founded in 1906, and its production became part of international timber trade. The close relationship between waterfront facilities, manufacturing and housing shaped the industrial landscape.

Culture and local stories

The old Honkalahti residential area reveals the everyday side of the sawmill community. Industrial history can be read through homes and neighbourhoods as well as machinery and quays. Here the lake landscape also holds the story of the people who lived around their place of work.
