Harbour and history

At Kalajoki, the river valley opens to the Bothnian Bay through the river mouth. Harbour places were associated with trade and coastal transport. The historic marketplace of Plassi records this relationship between inland waterways and the sea.

Culture and local stories

Plassi’s preserved village setting consists of compact groups of buildings and old routes. Its market tradition recalls a time when people came from a wide area to exchange goods. In Kalajoki’s cultural history, the river was therefore both a transport corridor and a meeting place for different communities.
