Harbour and history

Kemi’s harbour activity was moved towards deeper water as land uplift made the old harbour harder to use. Construction at Ajos began in 1939, and the first quay was completed in 1946. Forest-industry products and bulk cargo have been among the goods handled there.

Culture and local stories

Ajos tells a distinctive Bothnian Bay story about an evolving shoreline. Harbour history brings together the requirements of shipping and the conditions of the coast. Kemi’s industrial landscape can therefore also be read as a record of work and transport being adapted to their natural surroundings.
