Harbour and history

Kitee’s historic harbour landscape is associated with Puhos. Between Pyhäjärvi and Orivesi, water power, timber processing and transport developed together. The Puhos sawmill was founded in 1774, and industrial activity shaped a community around it.

Culture and local stories

During Nils Ludvig Arppe’s period, larches were planted for shipbuilding timber. Arppe’s larch forest gives the landscape a tangible connection with the wooden-ship era. At Puhos, industrial history is therefore preserved not only in buildings but also in living trees.
