Harbour and history

In Kokkola’s coastal history, trade and shipping developed together. The old town retains its relationship with the Sunti waterway and waterfront. Behind the trade passing through the harbour stood an urban community of merchants and craftspeople.

Culture and local stories

The wooden-house blocks of Neristan follow a seventeenth-century grid plan. Small courtyards and houses lining the streets preserve the scale of old Kokkola. This environment reveals the domestic side of a coastal trading town and the setting in which its inhabitants lived during the age of maritime commerce.
