Harbour and history

Kotka’s port grew in response to forest-industry exports. Timber and other products were brought to the shores of the Kymijoki estuary, while the railway strengthened inland connections. The different harbour districts record industrialisation and international trade.

Culture and local stories

Maritime Centre Vellamo in the old Kantasatama harbour brings maritime and regional history into one museum setting. A former working waterfront has therefore also become a place for collections and stories. Ships, cargoes and harbour work can be understood through the experiences of the people involved.
