Harbour and history

In Kumlinge, harbour places linked villages on different islands. Travelling by water was part of both domestic life and earning a living. Connections with neighbouring islands form an essential background to local history in this part of Åland’s archipelago.

Culture and local stories

The medieval stone walls and painted vaults of Saint Anne’s Church preserve the long history of the island parish. The former elementary school has become Kumlinge’s cultural centre. These two buildings show different ways in which community memory and cultural activities have been maintained.
