Harbour and history

Kustavi’s harbours and landing places linked villages with routes through the outer waters. Sailing and island livelihoods shaped its history. The importance of the sea is also reflected in the cultural memory preserved through literature associated with the region.

Culture and local stories

Volter Kilpi, born in Kustavi in 1874, portrayed the island community in his Archipelago series, which includes Alastalon salissa. A dedicated room at Kustavi Museum places his life and writing within the locality that provided material for the language and characters of his work.
