Harbour and history

Lappeenranta’s harbour connects the city with the Saimaa waterways. Rapasaari harbour developed alongside the railway connection completed in 1885. The meeting of rail and lake transport strengthened the town’s role in moving people and goods.

Culture and local stories

The fortress above the harbour preserves layers from the periods of Swedish and Russian rule. Its buildings and ramparts recall a border and garrison town. Harbour and fortress together form a landscape in which trade, travel and defence developed close to one another.
