Harbour and history

Nurmes stands beside Lake Pielinen, whose waterways form part of its transport history. The market town founded in 1876 was laid out on a ridge between Pielinen and Nurmesjärvi. The urban landscape facing the harbour makes the lake part of the town’s structure.

Culture and local stories

The wooden-house blocks of Old Nurmes preserve the scale of the early market town. Changes in elevation and views over the lakes give the area its character. Water transport and hillside homes therefore belong to closely connected parts of the local story.
