Harbour and history

Oulu’s older harbour history is preserved in the Toppila area. A flood opened a new channel there in 1724, and the location developed as a harbour. Tar warehouses and sea transport linked the town with inland forests and international sailing routes.

Culture and local stories

The history of Tervahovi records an export product that shaped Oulu and the labour required to handle it. The old harbour and industrial setting makes the trading town’s past visible. Connections between river, coast and forest therefore remain part of local cultural memory.
