Harbour and history

Parainen’s harbour history is closely associated with the lime industry. Quarrying, processing and transporting the archipelago’s limestone formed a connected system in which sea routes were important. Industry shaped both the built environment and the landscape.

Culture and local stories

The limestone areas of Parainen belong to the industrial heritage of the Turku archipelago. Quarries and production sites record changes in labour and technology. The local maritime story is therefore also a story of stone and skilled work, whose products travelled far beyond the islands.
