Harbour and history

Pohjankuru developed as a transport junction where sea, road and railway met. The harbour at the head of the bay served nearby ironworks. Its railway station was built in 1898–1899 to designs by Bruno Granholm.

Culture and local stories

The surroundings also include Finland’s first railway tunnel, constructed in 1896–1898. The old station environment makes transport history visible. The local story concerns the way inland industry was connected through the harbour with wider shipping routes, bringing different modes of travel into one place.
