Harbour and history

The Port of Pori operates in the Mäntyluoto and Tahkoluoto harbour areas. The Kokemäenjoki River reaches the sea in Pori. Harbour activity gradually moved towards the outer coast as land uplift and silting made access difficult for larger ships. Reposaari developed as a maritime trading community, and the railway completed in 1900 strengthened Mäntyluoto’s role as an outer harbour.

Pori Jazz and international stars

Pori hosts the Pori Jazz music festival. Its performers have included Alicia Keys, Björk, Bob Dylan (1996 and 2014), Carlos Santana, Eartha Kitt (1988), Earth, Wind & Fire, Elton John, James Brown, Kanye West, Bob Geldof, Don Johnson Big Band and Gloria Gaynor.

Others include Little Richard (1996), Miles Davis (1984), Ray Charles, Shaggy, Pet Shop Boys, Phil Collins with his big band, Ricky Martin, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tito Puente, Tom Jones and UB40. The port city’s international connections are therefore also reflected in a meeting place for music.
