Harbour and history

The waterfront warehouses beside the Porvoo River reflect Porvoo’s maritime past. This medieval town grew through trade connected to the river, the sea and coastal roads. Its riverside remains a distinctive part of the townscape.

Old Porvoo retains an irregular medieval street pattern, although many wooden buildings date from rebuilding after later fires. The route between the warehouses and the cathedral evokes the world of merchants and craftspeople.
