Harbour and history

Puumalansalmi links the waterways of southern and northern Lake Saimaa. The opening of the Saimaa Canal in 1856 helped Puumala develop into an inland harbour and a timber export centre.

Ilmarinen in the strait

In 1833, the early steamship Ilmarinen passed through on its maiden voyage from Puhos to Joutseno. Its journey adds a memorable layer to the harbour landscape: these waters witnessed a new chapter in Finnish shipping.
