Harbour and history

The maritime history of Rymättylä, or Rimito, includes herring fishing from Röölä. The Saukko fleet began its voyages in the late 1940s; the local expeditions had ended by 1975.

What is a dikseli?

A dikseli is a tool used to close herring barrels. Röölä’s herring heritage museum bears its name and preserves memories of the fleet. Paintings in the medieval Church of St James reveal a much older chapter of island life.
