Savonlinna on the Saimaa waterways

Savonlinna received its town charter in 1639 and later became a Saimaa water-traffic hub. Construction of Olavinlinna Castle began in 1475 where two waterways meet. Flowing water aided defence, while boats carried building materials.

The castle's opera tradition

The first opera festival was held at Olavinlinna in 1912 through Aino Ackté's initiative. Annual festivals resumed in 1967, linking the medieval fortress with the city's musical heritage.
