Harbour and history

The maritime industrial landscape of Tolkkinen, or Tolkis, is part of Porvoo. The area had a steam sawmill and a brickworks before pulp production began in 1893. Timber handling and storage also reshaped its waterfront.

Stories of mill and factory

A large sawmill followed the pulp mill, operating in Tolkis from 1976 to 2009. This industrial history recalls the work behind ships’ cargoes: wood moved from waterfront storage into processing and finished products.
