Harbour and history
In Varkaus, the Taipale Canal connects Haukivesi and Unnukka. Opened in 1840, the old canal was Finland’s first state-built lock canal. It strengthened inland transport routes across a lake region undergoing industrialisation.
Culture and local stories
The stone structures of the old canal remain as a visible record of early canal engineering. Here shipping history forms part of the landscape itself. In Varkaus’s story, the improvement of water routes and the growth of industry can therefore be understood as connected developments.
